Grit Virtual Book Club
Genius grants are desired by many and received by few. The MacCarthur Foundation supports “creative people, effective institutions, and influential networks building a more just, verdant, and peaceful world.” Ladro is excited to share Grit Virtual Book Club this summer. Grit written by Angela Duckworth, shares “everything she learned about grit as a scientist, teacher and parent.”
Dr. Angela Duckworth, MacCarthur Fellow and Professor of Psychology at The University of Pennsylvania, shares her grit research findings. Duckworth will inspire you with concrete examples of hard work and perseverance building skills and confidence. She shares what she has learned through teaching students, studying champion swimmers, West Point Cadets, and spelling bee champs. Her conversations with Seattle Seahawk’s Coach, Pete Carroll show a kinship. What they learned from one another is particularly interesting to those who follow the Seahawks.
Video and Reviews
If you’re not ready to jump into the Grit Virtual Book Club based upon instant New York Times Best Seller status, perhaps watching Dr. Duckworth’s TED Talk will have you headed to the library. If you prefer to read, the New York Times interview with Duckworth will introduce you to her research and her enthusiasm for her findings. Her work is lauded in Scientific America by Dr. Scott Barry Kaufman, in his review titled: Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance.
As with our last selection, the Grit Virtual Book Club won’t be meeting, but you may spy others in the Caffe Ladro community reading Grit. If you’re reading it too, you have the opportunity to start a conversation. We hope you enjoy it as much as we have!
Whether you want to get better at a hobby or a work skill, Grit provides concrete steps to succeed. If you are a parent, it will give you some great guides to help build perseverance in your children.
